Carmen Sandiego is a fictional character created by Brøderbund Software in the 1980s. She is a criminal mastermind and the main antagonist of the "Carmen Sandiego" video game series.
Carmen Sandiego was originally created in 1985 by Greg Dykes, David Siefkin, and Patrick J. Barrett III as an educational video game for children to teach them about geography. The name of the character was taken from a Venezuelan singer named "Carmen Miranda."
The first Carmen Sandiego game was released in 1985 on Apple II and Macintosh computers, followed by versions on Commodore 64, DOS-based PCs, Atari ST, Amiga and Mac OS X. The original game had players following clues to capture Carmen's henchmen around the world
